Salon says their paid subscriptions to premium content have topped 35,000 and that they are "encouraged by the ongoing success." News.com adds that "subscriptions supply 30 percent of the company's revenue."
Sounds great, but meanwhile Robert Loch at Dotcom Scoop jabs that the press release does not indicate whether the 30% figure is due more to the increased subscription revenue, or declining overall revenue. "Given the fantastic chance to receive Salon Premium content for as little as $2.50 per month, a staggering 3,770,000 of Salon’s reported 3.8 million readership have decided not to bother." Loch has previously speculated that the revenue from a low subscription conversion rate might not offset the advertising losses caused as the gating-off of premium content reduces overall site traffic.
Sigh. I like Salon. I hope they work things out.
