Free Things Can Disappear at a Moment's Notice

After Dave Winer's decision to close weblogs.com, many people comment that there's a limit to what you get for free. Ahem, didn't we hear that story again and again? The ability of some people (I'm not talking about the people I linked to, I'm talking about upset users) to build inflated expectations about things that are given to them continues to amaze me.
