Usa.net has announced that they will start charging for their Net@ddress e-mail service, which is one of the oldest free e-mail services still in existence. Many users have had Net@ddress addresses since 1996. From the front page at Net@ddress:
'In today's changing business environment, revenue sources are no longer adequate to support our Net@ddress free email service. The current Net@ddress free email service will be discontinued on July 31, 2001. To keep your current Net@ddress email account, subscribe for a new Net@ddress Messaging Center account today.'So much for the previously advertised 'free, permanent, private e-mail addresses'. Pricing is not available at this time.
Update 6.30.01: Pricing update via another alert reader Gary. From the Net@address website... ' Order today and save 40%. Take advantage of our introductory price of only $29.99 per year. Discount ends July 31, 2001!'
Over at HushMail Users received this email:
' Important Notice : HushMail 2.0 allows you to manage your mail more efficiently, as the amount of disk space you have used is now displayed. As of the launch date of version 2.0, the disk storage space allotted to each free HushMail account will be reduced from 5MB to 2MB. We have made this decision in order to continue to provide, improve and grow this free service.'The HushMail home page still advertises "Free 5MB storage space". Hmm. Pricing starts at $4.99 per month, payable quarterly or annually.
