News Sites Hustle for Profitability: "In a recent survey of 429 newspaper Web sites worldwide by media consulting group Innovation, only 5.5 percent of North American sites currently charge a subscriber fee. But many are re-considering that model. Overseas, a trend toward charging online subscriptions is already visible. Leading the way are papers with a significant international online audience. For example, The Irish News, Belfast's largest morning daily and a source of news from home to a largely ex-pat audience in the United States and Britain, is charging users $100 a year for access. The Times of London has just introduced a subscription charge for overseas visitors only."
